The EGLF information Booklet and Brochure were prepared by EGLF with the financial support of SIDA and the technical support of INASP. It describes the vision, mission, some of the accomplished activities of the forum, and an overview of the gender gaps in Ethiopian HEIs.

About the forum

Background
The Ethiopia Gender Learning Forum (EGLF) is a network of professionals interested in promoting Gender equality and equity in the higher education and research institutions in Ethiopia. It was established in 2020 with membership of professionals from various higher education and research institutions. INASP began supporting establishment and strengthening of the Forum in 2020 and it is planned to continue until the end of 2022. EGLF is:
- An umbrella platform of affiliated groups with a common focus
- The (collective) voice for gender in higher education and research in Ethiopia
- An independent, multi-sectoral body giving voice to its diverse members on issues of gender in HE and research
- The first point of contact for all institutions looking to work on issues related to gender in HE and research in Ethiopia
Vision
The Forum’s vision is to become a cohesive and integrated platform for fostering gender equity in Ethiopia’s knowledge system.
Mission
The Forum’s mission is to promote gender equity in
Ethiopia’s higher education and research institutions.
The major objectives of the Forum include:
- Continuously generate and analyze evidence on issues of gender equity within Ethiopia’s research system;
- Provide evidence-based recommendations to inform policy and program decisions and practices for advancing gender equity in Ethiopia’s research system.
- Advocate for and contribute to the design and/or implementation of policies, strategies, programs that advance gender equity in Ethiopia’s higher education and research institutions.
- Capture best practices from within and outside of Ethiopia in promoting gender equity in research systems and communicate insights/learning.
- Serve as a platform for dialogue, networking, experience sharing, and collaboration within members and among other stakeholders.
- Forge partnerships and collaborate with national, regional, and international stakeholders working toward the common goal of advancing gender equity.
Membership
Membership is a combination of institutional and individual membership and is open to all individuals regardless of their gender.
- Institutional membership: official invitation, delegation of a representative.
- Individual membership: self-applications.
- Requirements:
- Affiliation with a higher education institution or research institute in Ethiopia;
- Evidence of commitment to and engagement in the issue of gender equity demonstrated by research, publications, previous experiences in related endeavors, and/or references.
The main activities to be conducted under the project in 20222 include the following:
- EGLF Roadmap Development Beyond 2022
- Create a ‘Gender Champions’ support pack/toolkit
- Create communication materials to promote gender equality and equity
- Conduct Gender Champions Workshop in collaboration with the University of Gondar
- Gather feedback on the ‘value-added’ of the forum (what do Gender Offices want/need from the EGLF?)
- Conduct gender learning meetings on selected topics
