Governance

The Executive Board makes decisions on all matters affecting the Academy including management and coordination of activities, formulation of bylaws, convening the sessions of the General Assembly and preparing annual activities and financial reports. It also appoints standing and ad-hoc committees when the need arises. The Board meets on a quarterly basis.
The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences is an autonomous organization that is governed by the General Assembly. The EAS General Assembly, which is the supreme decision making body of the Academy, oversees the overall activities and engagements of the EAS Board and the EAS Secretariat.

General Assembly

The General Assembly of EAS is the supreme decision making body of the Academy. The Assembly, which is composed of all regular Fellows of the Academy, has the power and responsibility of electing the President, the Principal Vice-President, the Vice-President, the Treasurer and members of the Executive Board. Moreover, the General Assembly is responsible for:

  • Adopting bylaws of the Academy;
  • Inducting Fellows, Associate Fellows and Honorary Fellows to the Academy;
  • Approving annual plans, budgets, performance and financial reports of the Academy;
  • Assigning Board members in the place of those members who are not able execute their tasks due to various factors;
  • Assigning responsibilities to members as per their respective field of expertise; and
  • Appointing external auditors of the Academy.

The Management Board

The Management Board of EAS is composed of the President, the Principal Vice-President, the Vice-President, the Treasurer and the Executive Director of the Academy, who serves as non-voting member and Secretary of the Board. The Board also includes four Fellows of the Academy assigned by the General Assembly together with representative of the Ministry of Science and Technology and two government assigned researchers from governmental research institutes.

Moreover, the Executive Board also takes part in convening the sessions of the General Assembly; preparing annual activities and financial reports; and appointing standing and ad-hoc committees when the need arises.

The President

The President is responsible for representing the Academy at all levels, presiding over all meetings of the Board and all sessions of the General Assembly. Furthermore, the President ensures the implementations of decisions of the General Assembly and represents the Academy in all its relations with governmental bodies and its partners. 

The Principal Vice-President and the Vice-President

The role of the Principal Vice-President and Vice-President is to provide all the necessary support to the President of the Academy. The Principal Vice-President will replace and act on behalf of the President in his/her absence, whereas, the Vice-President will act as the President in the absence of both the President and the Principal Vice-President.

The Treasurer

The Treasurer of the Academy overlooks the financial issues of the Academy. The Treasurer is also responsible for presenting annual and quarterly financial reports to the Board.

The Executive Director of the Secretariat

The Executive Director of the Academy manages the effective execution of the Academy’s day-to-day activities. The Executive Director is also responsible for appointing and administering the staff of the Secretariat. He/she also manages the Academy’s financial affairs as per the approved budget and submits performance reports to the Board.
