Fetien Abay Abera is Professor of Plant Breeding and Seed at Mekelle University (MU). She obtained her PhD (2007) in Plant and Seed Science from the Norwegian University of life Sciences, Norway. Currently, she is Vice President for Research and Community Services (VPRCS) of Mekelle University. She has also served as Director for Institute of Environment, Gender and Development Studies (IEGDS). Her fund raising efforts in collaboration with colleagues in Africa, Asia, Europe and USA have contributed to building the capacity of Mekelle University, particularly postgraduate training of the university staff. She has nationally released five barley varieties adapted to the drought prone areas of the country. Currently she is leading the Dutch funded ISSD Project of Tigray Unit and in-country coordinator of the USAID feed the future Innovation Lab for the Reduction of Post-Harvest Loss (PHL IL) in collaboration with Kansas State University. She is recipient of a number of awards, including the East African Regional Laureate of AU Kwame Nkrumah scientific achievement prize (2014), the Presidential Women in Development award (2009, Ethiopia) and winner of Ethiopian Women of Excellence (2015). Prof. Fetien has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals in the area of plant breeding, seed, agro biodiversity and innovations in farming.
