Dr. Negus Adefris is a Senior Product Development Specialist at 3M Company in Maplewood, Minnesota, USA. He obtained his PhD in Material Science and Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology (1993). As a fellow of the National Research Council in the USA, he did post-doctoral research at NASA with the space structure program group in Langley, VA. Currently, he is one of the leading researchers in the Industrial Business Group at 3M in Abrasive Systems Division. His invention of what is known as Precision Shaped Abrasive Grain has brought a change in the abrasive science. Negus has several technical publications and patents. His patents are some of the most cited publications in the abrasive industry leading not only in commercial success at his current company but also contributing in advancements in the science of abrasives. He has been awarded numerous awards from 3M marking the commercial success of his inventions. In 1996, he was inducted into the council of outstanding young engineers at Georgia Tech in Atlanta and in 2012 he was honored as the Black Engineer of the Year for Outstanding Technical Contribution in Industry in the USA.
