The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS) is a not-for-profit and non-governmental organization established to promote a culture of scientific inquiry and creativity and the pursuit of excellence and scholarship in the sciences among Ethiopians. EAS, which was established in 2010 and got recognition by the Act of Parliament in 2013 (Proclamation No.783/2013), is mandated to provide, inter alia, evidence-based policy advice to the government and other stakeholders. Its major activities include undertaking consensus studies, conducting convening activities such as public lectures, conferences, workshops, and symposia on issues of national priority, and promoting science, technology, and innovation.

EAS would like to welcome suitable candidates to apply for the position of Science Center Curator.

  1. JOB SUMMARY

The Science Center Curator will have a thorough understanding of the science center’s operations, as well as good communication skills. S/he is in charge of accurately and effectively assembling, cataloging, managing, and presenting or displaying all of the science center’s exhibits; ensuring that the items on display are in excellent condition and that exhibits are eye-catching but not too cluttered; forming and maintaining relationships with stakeholders; promoting and popularizing the exhibits; and organizing group visits and science fairs. Coming up with innovative, engaging exhibits and displays that will appeal to a wide range of people requires creative talent. S/he must be an effective problem solver with excellent emotional intelligence and professional ethics.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Displaying and explaining to visitors exhibits in the different units of the science center;
  • Generating ideas to the creation of innovative science exhibits to enhance  the interactive nature of the Science Museum
  • Participating in coordinating educational programs and public outreach campaigns to promote science center visits;
  • Participating in organizing visits to the science center by various communities, groups, and individuals;
  • Participating in promoting the visibility of the science center exhibits through different means;
  • Conducting research on the science exhibits and creating  interpretive materials that will be used to educate visitors
  • Participating  in the organization of periodic public events like science fairs, science competitions, and science lectures;
  • Responsible for keeping records of exhibits and preparing catalogs of acquisitions;
  • Responsible for the proper installation of science exhibits and ensuring their protection and maintenance; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the science center director.

Employment duration: Two years, renewable based on performance.

Salary and benefits: As per the Academy’s salary scale

  1. QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCIES
  • BSc in Physics, and other related fields
  • A minimum of one year of experience in teaching or related work;
  • Good knowledge of the five pillars of Physics – mechanics, oscillation and mechanical waves, thermodynamics, electricity, and magnetism, light and optics;
  • A passion for the history of science and technology and an eye for details
  • Good computer and networking skills;
  • Fluent in spoken and written English and Amharic;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly handling school kids;
  • Ability and skills in presenting and communicating messages effectively;
  • Superior organizational skills and timeliness in carrying out responsibilities; and
  • Has the ability to learn more about sciences other than his or her field of study.
