The United Kingdom’s Royal Society has elected Prof. Sebsebe Demissew as one of the ten new Foreign Members this year. The Royal Society is one of the world’s most prestigious science academies. Each year it admits to its membership up to 52 new Fellows from the UK and the Commonwealth and up to 10 Foreign Members from around the globe. Prof. Sebsebe was one of the 75 candidates shortlisted for nomination as Foreign Member of the Royal Society. Members are elected for life through a peer review process based on substantial contribution to science. Election to the Royal Society is a mark of international recognition for distinguished work in research. Prof. Sebsebe’s election to the Royal Society’s membership is yet another testament to his outstanding research work in Ethiopia, Africa and Europe which has earned him similar other national and international recognition and honors.

Prof. Sebsebe Demissew is Founding Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, which he has ably served as one of the first Board members and Chair of the Natural Sciences Working Group. He is recipient of the prestigious Kew International Medal for his distinguished work aligned with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, of which he is an Honorary Research Fellow. He also received an honorary doctorate degree from Nottingham University in 2010 and was recognized as Honorary Professor at the University’s School of Biosciences for his substantial contributions to knowledge in the Botanical Sciences.
Prof. Sebsebe is Professor of Plant Systematics and Biodiversity at Addis Ababa University and Executive Director of the Gullele Botanic Garden in Addis Ababa. He has published over 50 new plant taxa, for which his name has been stamped for life with a species named in his honor Aloe Weloensis Sebsebe.
