The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences celebrated its 7th founding Anniversary with different programs on Monday, March 27, 2009 at its Headquarters.
Its Headquarters used to be the residence of Belaten Geta Hiruy Weldeselassie who was a well-known writer and the first Foreign Minister of Ethiopia.
In his welcoming speech, EAS President, Prof. Tsige Gebre-Mariamstressed the importance of launching an Arts and Science Center. He also spoke of the significance of having an Academy of the sciences in building a knowledge economy.
Dr. Hirut Woldemariam, Minister of Culture and Tourism, officially opened the ceremony. In her opening remarks, she pointed out the important role science plays in improving our lives. She also went on to underscore the due attention needed to augment efforts towards promoting science.
Prof. Masresha Fetene, Executive Director of EAS, presented those in attendance with a short report on the seven years journey by the Academy. He stated that the Academy has admitted new members throughout the seven years, hosted and participated in international conferences and has launched monthly public lectures on various scientific issues. He also raised major researches undertaken as milestones in the Academy’s seven years journey.
The Academy launched the Belaten Geta Hiruy Weldeselassie Arts Center during the ceremony. On exhibit in the new Arts Center were photographs and artifacts depicting the life and travels of Belaten Geta Hiruy and his family. Another section of the Arts Center also showcased photographs highlighting the strides taken by the EAS. The Arts Center also includes a library that too was opened during the occasion.
A book authored by Belaten Geta Hiruy Weldeselassie in 1911 entitled “The Ethiopian delegation in Europe and the Middle East”and edited by Prof. Bahru Zewde was also launched on the occasion.Prof. Bahru Zewde hailed the detailed account of events by Belaten Geta Hiruy Weldeselassie and spoke of the challenges he faced in having the book ready for print. Dr. Fekade Azeze and Prof. Shiferaw Bekele, on the other hand, gave a short review of the book.
The book marks the first publication by newly established publisher – Ethiopian Academy Press. Therefore, the event was not only a launching ceremony for the book but for the publisher as well.
In attendance were Academy Fellows, government officials and family of Belaten Geta Hiruy Weldeselassie.
