Declaration launched to enable an equitable research system in Ethiopia

EAS and INASP jointly launched a declaration on Enabling an Equitable Research System in Ethiopia 27th March 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Declaration is the upshot of a dialogue, co-hosted by EAS and INASP, from 22-24 November 2018 to explore a shared vision for a holistic, equitable and collaborative research system in Ethiopia and identify the impeding factors that limit the instatement of equitable system. The dialogue convened key stakeholders in Ethiopia’s research system including vice presidents and research directors from public and private universities, representatives of research institutions, researchers, and officials from Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

During the launch, H.E Dr. Shumete Gizaw, State Minister, Ministry of Innovation and Technology (MINT) congratulated the Academy and INASP for producing a workable Declaration. He also expressed his Ministry’s commitment to work with the Academy and relevant stakeholders to translate the recommendations forwarded. Prof. Tsige Gebre-Mariam, President of EAS, emphasized that researches in Ethiopia and beyond should address community problems and the outputs ought to be disseminated for wider consumption and public debate. Prof. Tsige reaffirmed that the realization of an equitable research system in Ethiopia demands sustained dedication and collaboration of stakeholders.

The gathering discussed the follow-up modality and sustainability to ensure the implementation of the Declaration.
