15 Women Researchers attended Scientific Writing Workshop

The Society of Ethiopian Women in Science and Technology (SEWiST) held a training workshop on scientific paper writing from 21 –27 July 2019 at Embilta Hotel in Addis Ababa. SEWIST organized the Workshop with the support of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany alumni project, and, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS).

The Society of Ethiopian Women in Science and Technology (SEWiST) held a training workshop on scientific paper writing from 21 –27 July 2019 at Embilta Hotel in Addis Ababa. SEWIST organized the Workshop with the support of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany alumni project, and, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS).

The Workshop was designed for SEWiST members who are engaged in research and need hands-on training on how to write a scientific paper for publication in reputable journals. A call for application for the training was out in the month of May 2019 and competent candidates were selected on the basis of the criteria set for the training.

The training workshop was officially opened by Professor Masresha Fetene, Executive Director of EAS, on Monday July 22, 2019. On his brief introductory speech, he emphasized the need for such focused trainings since scientific publications by women academicians and researchers is still very much limited in Ethiopia.

Participants were 15 women from different universities and research institutes from various parts of the country, who came to the training with already analyzed data. The training was conducted by four experienced academicians. Each day, there were presentations followed by practical work by each participant on her draft paper. At the beginning of the training the trainees chose the potential journals where they will submit their papers.

What made the training unique was all the participants were accommodated in the Hotel and were able to focus on their draft papers.

The last day of the training was a brief presentation of the draft paper by each trainee and some feedback was given by trainees and the trainers. In this way the workshop also enabled peer learning and exchange of ideas.

The training workshop ended with issuing of certificates and a commitment by the trainers and the trainees as well to follow up with the started drafted paper until each trainee is able to submit the paper for publication.
