Prof. Atalay Alem, Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences and Professor of Psychiatry at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia won the 2019 Harvard Award in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The Award is given to Prof. Atalay in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of Psychiatry in Ethiopia and globally.

The Award is given to Prof. Atalay in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of Psychiatry in Ethiopia and globally.
Each year the award is given to an individual whose lifelong career contributions have significantly advanced the fields of Psychiatric Epidemiology and/or Biostatistics. The award includes travel to Boston, a lecture presented to a general scientific audience, a reception or dinner, and a plaque to commemorate the event. Ordinarily, nominees are at a very senior level in their careers. This year, the award winner was chosen by trainees, including those at the master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral level in Harvard.
Prof. Atalay Alem has served as Medical Director and Psychiatrist at Amanuel Hospital, as Executive Director of the College of Health Sciences and as Head of Staff Development Unit and Reform Officer for Health Sciences at AAU. He is the recipient of certificate from the Theodore and Vada Stanley Foundation, USA, and the Robert Giel Award for teaching, service development and research in mental health in Ethiopia.
