The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS) proudly extends its heartfelt congratulations to its esteemed Founding Fellow, former President, and former Chairperson of the EAS Board, Prof. Tsige Gebre Mariam, on being honoured with the Lifetime Outstanding Professional Service Award in the Health Sector by the Ministry of Health, Ethiopia.
Prof. Tsige, a distinguished scholar and Professor of Pharmaceutics at the College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University (AAU), received the award during the 27th Annual Review Meeting of the Ministry of Health in Jimma City. This recognition celebrates his remarkable and sustained contributions to the development of Ethiopia’s health sector.
A Lifetime of Service to Ethiopian Science and Health
With over four decades of dedicated service to Ethiopia’s health, education, and research systems, Prof. Tsige has made profound impacts through teaching, research, leadership, and institutional development.
His multifaceted contributions include:
Academic Leadership: As Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research at AAU, he contributed immensely to expanding postgraduate programs, strengthening research policies, and fostering partnerships with more than 50 international universities.
National Policy Development: He played a key role in shaping national pharmaceutical policies, including developing the roadmap for the Kilinto Pharmaceutical Industrial Park and the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Industry Development Plan (2015–2025). He also spearheaded the establishment of the Regional Bioequivalence Center (RBEC), the first of its kind in East Africa, which was recognized by the WHO and ISO-certified.
Research and Innovation: He coordinated and led major research initiatives such as the University-wide SIDA-SAREC project and TRISUSTAIN project, which involved multiple sub-Saharan countries and focused on bioactive plants. He has authored over 175 scientific publications.
Scientific leadership: As a Founding Fellow and former President of the EAS, Prof. Tsige championed numerous studies and policy recommendations critical to Ethiopia’s sustainable development.
Continental and Global Engagement
At the regional level, Prof. Tsige served as a board member of the Network of African Academies of Sciences (NASAC), representing 30 African academies from 2019 to 2022.
Globally, he was elected to the Science Executive Committee of the Inter-Academy Partnership (IAP), a consortium of 150 academies worldwide, during the 2019 General Assembly in South Korea, where he represented Africa for three consecutive years.
His international recognition includes the prestigious Georg Forster Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany, 2017).
Commitment to Service and Community Impact
Beyond academia, Prof. Tsige has been deeply committed to community service and national capacity building. He is the Founder and Executive Director of the Zewditu Getachew Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to breast cancer awareness and prevention, working in collaboration with the EAS and other national and international partners.
His lifelong dedication to advancing science, strengthening health systems, and nurturing future generations of scientists embodies the highest ideals of service to society.
