Professor of Geophysics at the University of Edinburgh with research interests in geomagnetism and electromagnetic induction. She is currently investigating the rapid dynamics of the Earth’s outer core, part of its geodynamo operation, using satellite magnetometry data. She has undertaken a number of magnetotelluric field-based studies, particularly in the East African rift and Afar, including several in Ethiopia, mostly as part of large inter-disciplinary projects, characterising the role of magma in continental rifting. Awards include Order of the British Empire, the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society of London, and an Honorary DSc from the University of Sussex, UK.
