Hans Hurni was ordinary professor for geography and sustainable development and founding president of the Board of the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern, Switzerland.
From 2000-2016 he was editor-in-chief of the international, peer-reviewed journal ‘Mountain Research and Development’ (MRD), and he was initiator and director of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) North-South programme from 2001-2013.
In Ethiopia, Hans Hurni was initiator and director of the Soil Conservation Research Programme (SCRP), after having served as warden of the Simien Mountains National Park. In 2009, he received an honorary PhD in Agriculture from Haramaya University.
