Ethiopia Illustrated፡ Church Paintings, Maps and Drawings

This volume contains seven essays on Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church paintings and the lives and works of George Wilhelm Schimper and Edward Zander. The essays are organized into two parts – the first analyzes the art of sacred subjects produced by Ethiopian artists, and the second discusses the mapmaking of botanist George Wilhelm Schimper and draughtsman Edward Zander’s pictorial representations of scenes from everyday life in mid- nineteenth-century Ethiopia.  Each Chapter is richly illustrated, and the paintings are introduced along with commentary on their religious, social and historical contexts.
