Seyoum Mengistou is Professor of Aquatic Ecology at AAU. He obtained his PhD in Limnology from Waterloo University, Canada, in 1990. He has served as Director of the Zoological Natural History Museum and Head of the Biology Department. He served as the executive member of the Biological Society of Ethiopia (BSE) and founding and executive member of the Ethiopian Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Association (EFASA). He has mentored and supervised several MSc and PhD students in the Aquatic Sciences, Fisheries and Aquaculture Stream of the Department of Zoological Sciences, AAU. He is the recipient of several research grants and has conducted several studies on lakes, rivers, wetlands and reservoirs of the country. He has served as Chairman of the Ethiopian Chapter of the East African Water Association and as representative of developing countries in the SIL (Society of international Limnologists) working group. Presently, Prof. Seyoum is Editor-in-Chief of the Ethiopian Journal of Biological Sciences (EJBS). He has published extensively on aquatic ecology issues in both local and international journals.
