Mirgissa Kaba, PhD, is an enthusiastic professional who has competencies that bridged the gap between
social and public health sciences during his close to 30 years of teaching, research and program management
and leadership career. After his initial training in Sociology, he started his career as teaching and research
staff of the current Jimma University as a graduate assistant in 1988. He served the university with a teaching,
research, program coordinator, and Director Positions. He resigned from the university in 2000.
He joined UNICEF in 2001 where he set up and managed UNICFE’s HIV and AIDS program. During his
stay with UNICEF, he contributed to the government’s HIV and youth policies and strategies and was
instrumental in generating additional financial support for UNICEF’s HIV and AIDS program. He resigned
from UNICF to quench his long-standing pursuit for an academic career. He joined the Swiss Tropical and
Public Health Institute of the University of Basel where he completed his PhD towards the end of 2011.
Mirgissa has written nearly 60 scientific paper in reputable peer reviewed journals in specific such areas as
indigenous medicine, HIV and AIDS, Non-Communicable Disease (particularly Cervical Cancer), maternal
health, urban health and public health education, etc. Currently, Mirgissa is an Associate Professor at the
School of Public Health, Addis Ababa University with a focus on Cultural epidemiology where he plays
important role among others in the areas of Social and Behavioral Health Communication. In addition to his
routine teaching, research and community service, Mirgissa is an Editor In Chief of the Ethiopian Journal of
Health Development, a pioneer peer reviewed scientific journal in Ethiopia.
