Request for Expressions of Interest for Adaptation of Training Manual and Delivering a Training Programme on Research Communication
The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences has received a financial support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and intends to apply part of the proceeds of this grant to payments under the contract for the study to be conducted under the Bridge project.
The service is adapting a training manual and delivering a Training Programme on Research Communication. The training is sought to build skills of the researchers to effectively communicate their research results and influence policy and decision making.
The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences now invites eligible consultants to indicate their interest in providing the services. Interested consultants must provide information indicating that they are qualified to perform the services (description of similar assignments and availability of appropriate skills and a link could be a possible attachment). A consultant will be selected in accordance with the procedures set out in the Academy’s Guidelines.

The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS) was first founded on March 27, 2010 by a group of prominent scholars drawn from a variety of disciples and professions and launched on April 10, 2010. The mandate of EAS is to provide evidence-based advice to the Government, to promote culture of science among the public and to promote the development of the sciences and their applications. EAS carries out its mandate by undertaking consensus studies, publishing reports, organizing conferences, public lectures and workshops on issues deemed to be nationally important.
2.Background of the Assignment:
There is an agreement among policy makers and advocates that using evidence to inform decisions is essential for effective policymaking and program design. Research often has profound implications for policy, but without effective communication between researchers and policy audiences, the significance of research findings may be lost.
In the effort to implementing this training activity, EAS is planning to adapt and contextualize a comprehensive training module to support capacity building of the emerging researchers in the area of research communication.
This training programme is believed to be a critical intervention aimed to bridge the gap that often lies between research and policy. The training is sought to build skills of the researchers to effectively communicate their research results and influence policy and decision making.
EAS is therefore seeking to recruit and deploy a trainer who first adapts the training module and eventually delivers the training to the researchers. The Trainer shall adapt the available tools, materials, and approaches PRB has developed and refined over long years of training researchers to communicate with policy audiences.
The main objective of the training is to contribute to the capacity building of emerging researchers by improving their knowledge and skill to design a research communication strategy and communicate research findings to policy-makers so as to bridge the gap between research and policy.
4.Key Tasks of the Assignment:
- Adapt an appealing, credible, and easy to read & understand complete training module contents.
- Deliver and facilitate a training programme.
- Evaluate effectiveness and usefulness of the training to know whether the objectives are met.
5.Qualification Requirements of the Trainer:
- Have a graduate degree of MA/MSc or PhD in development studies, Communication and Journalism, Economics, Public policy studies, Educational curriculum, and/or other related fields of studies.
- Have researched, published, and/or managed research projects preferably on communication and related areas.
- Be committed to communicating research to inform policy process and decision making.
- Be proficient in communicate in English: both written and spoken.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing training or educational modules/curriculum, training materials, etc.
- Extensive experience in delivering trainings.
- Strong understanding of the policy environment in Ethiopia.
- The trainer is expected to serve as both content expert and trainer.
