Dr. Debrework Zewdie, an Ethiopian national, has dedicated the past 30 years to international development work, particularly focusing on mitigating the cross-sectorial impact of the HIV epidemic on development. She received her PhD in clinical immunology from the University of London and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at SYVA (a diagnostic company in Palo Alto, California) and was a Senior MacArthur Fellow at Harvard University. Her work has been published in over 100 journals and book chapters, covering a wide variety of subjects. Dr. Zewdie has lectured at universities in Africa, Europe and the USA, including Cornell, Harvard, John Hopkins, Stanford, and the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, advancing critical development issues ranging from the impact of HIV/AIDS on development to operational research issues in developing countries. She has appeared regularly on TV and radio, including the News Hour with Jim Lehrer (PBS), CNN, BBC, and NPR both as an advocate and as a technical expert. Dr. Zewdie retired from the World Bank in 2014 and is continuing her development work with higher learning institutions and nonprofit organizations.
