Gen Suwa is Professor of Biological Anthropology and Paleoanthropology at the University Museum and the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Tokyo (UT). He obtained his PhD in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley, USA (1990). Currently, he is member of the Japan Science Council. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals in the area of paleoanthropology and human evolutionary studies. He is a recipient of several research awards, including the Asahi Prize. He served as Editor-in-Chief of Anthropological Science, the official journal of the Anthropological Society of Nippon. He was a key member of the international research team that named, described and interpreted Ardipithecus ramidus. He has pioneered application of laser scanning and micro-ct technology to morphological evaluations of teeth and bone ranging from the earliest hominid fossils to recent osteological materials. He has also codirected the paleoanthropological research at Konso that resulted in new insights regarding the emergence and development of the Acheulean palaeolithic technology. Most recently, he has promoted research of the late Miocene Chorora Formation, resulting in the discovery and naming of Chororapithecus abyssinicus and establishment of its chronology. He has co-designed several anthropology and human evolution exhibits at the UT University Museum, the Aichi 2005 Expo African Pavilion and the National Museum of Ethiopia, including the millennium special exhibit: The Human Evolution Timeline in Ethiopia.
