Prof. Gunnar Aksel attended Medical School in University of Oslo and graduated as MD in 1970. In 1973, he was employed as Junior Scientist at the newly opened Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) in Addis Ababa. He got his PhD from University of Oslo in 1980. In 1984, he returned to AHRI as Medical Director. From 1986 to 1992, Prof. Aksel served as head of development and clinical testing of a new vaccine against menigococcal B meningitis at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. In 1996, he established at the University of Oslo a Master of Philosophy program in International Community Health, which he headed until his retirement in 2014. He has been attached to Ethiopia and in particular to AHRI as board member and collaborating scientist in various international projects. He has also partnered with Aklilu Lemma Institute of Pathobiology, Addis Ababa University, in studies of mycobacterial disease among Ethiopian pastoralists. He has served on various expert committees of WHO. Prof. Aksel has authored more than 200 scientific papers.
