Science Center Director

  1. JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Deputy Executive Director, the Science Center Director is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Science Center activities. She/he follows up activities of house displays, exhibits, creating pubic awareness in scientific enquiry, discovery awards, fund raising and preparation and distribution of various brochures of EAS.

  1. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

Job Responsibility # 1:  Planning and Implementing Core Activities

  • Plans, organizes, directs and controls activities of the Center;
  • Develops policies, strategies and guidelines for planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluation of the activities of the Center;
  • Prepares short, medium and long term activity plans and budget for the Center  in collaboration with the concerned units;
  • Keeps informing   the public on the principles and applications of science and technology;
  • Promotes and fosters interest in scientific curiosity and inquiry;
  • Cultivates creativity and innovation;
  • Follows up house displays that explain various scientific principles;
  • Ensures that house displays serve both adults and children;
  • Makes sure that exhibits include kids corner and  a gallery;
  • Ensures arts that promote science include paintings, photography, documentary films, stage performances, poetry reading, lectures, and similar events;
  • Ensures that exhibits include Natural sciences, paleontology, communication and IT shows;
  • Makes sure that both English and Amharic languages are employed in different settings in the Center;
  • Serves to  increase the involvement of the public in scientific inquiry;
  •  Calls for proposal for ideas that will serve as exhibit items once or twice a year;
  • Establishes and implements discovery awards for young, junior and senior scientists who are actively engaged in research;
  • Continually promotes programs and events of EAS to the public using various avenues including: brochure that indicates the exhibit on display, the schedule of events; short promotional DVDs that depict the amazing world of science; hosting  a web page that is interactive and regularly updated;
  • Conducts fund raising activities using  webpage and other  tools;
  • Identifies and establishes revenue generation resources including admission Fee, event fee, membership fee, souvenir shop,  Café, sales of publications, etc.;

Job Responsibility # 2: Staff Management

    • Manages, supervises, leads guides and supports staff responsible to her/him;
  • Ensures the development of management skills of staff directly reporting to her/him to increase their capacity to develop and undertake major initiatives and assume larger responsibilities to further expand the impact and sustainability of the Center;
  • Supports the development of high performing teams at the Center and ensures that appropriate procedures and policies are followed;
  • Completes performance planning, monitoring, and annual performance appraisals of staff directly reporting to her/him. 

Job Responsibility # 3: Networking, Learning and Reporting

    • Establishes and maintains formal and informal communication mechanisms with government bodies, higher learning institutions, research institutions, donors and other stakeholders;
    • Highly organized approach to work;
    • Ability to see the big picture and assimilate complex scientific information;
  • Produces quarterly, bi-annual and annual performance reports to the Executive Director.         

Job Responsibility # 4: Others

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
  1. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. EDUCATION/TRAINING
  • PhD or MSc/MA in Science/Technology/Health/Agriculture/Social Sciences or related field.
  1. EXPERIENCE
  • 6/8 years of relevant work experience, out of which 2 years in senior managerial position.
  1.  TECHNICAL AND OTHER SKILLS
  • Ability to provide leadership, communicate effectively, and promote a team approach to enhance staff commitment to successfully implement Science Center strategic plan;
  • Demonstrated technical and managerial ability, sound judgment, ability to interact and work effectively with others at all levels;
  • Highly organised approach to work;
  • Ability to see the big picture and assimilate complex scientific information;
  • Good knowledge of natural and social sciences developments and issues;
  • Good interpersonal communication skill and ability to effectively liaise with the public and other stakeholders.
