EAS Founding Fellow Prof Tekalign Mamo passed

It is with profound sadness that EAS heard the news of the passing away of Prof Tekalign Mamo, EAS Founding Fellow and a renowned Professor of Soil Science, on 4 September, 2017.

Prof. Tekalign served as a State Minister of Agriculture; as a Vice President of Haramaya University; and a Senior Director at the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency where he led the Ethiopian Soil Information System (EthioSIS) and the Agriculture Commercialization Cluster (ACC) Programs. Prof. Tekalign was also the founder and first Editor-in-Chief of the Ethiopian Journal of Natural Resources. Professor Tekalign has made significant contributions to the growth of grain production in Ethiopia and is known for introducing community-based land rehabilitation work during his time in office as a State Minister of Agriculture. Professor Tekalign’s leadership in rehabilitation of soil and its wellbeing resulted in the transformation of over 15 million hectares of degraded land in Ethiopia.

Prof. Tekalign was a recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the 2014 African Green Revolution Laureate Award and the Norman Borlaug Laureate International prize by International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) in 2016.

EAS extends its sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of Prof. Tekalegn Mamo.  

Prof Tekalign will be laid to rest on Saturday, September 9 at Holy Trinity Church in Addis Ababa.
